<trans-abstract xml:lang="en">
<title>Introduction</title><p>Introduction. The aim was to summarize information on the mechanisms of neurotropic activity of the steroid saponin group from roots and rhizomes of Dioscorea nipponica Makino.</p>
<title>Text</title><p>Text. The neurotropic effects of steroid saponins of Dioscorea nipponica (diosgenin, dioscin, protodioscin, methylprotodioscin) include both nonspecific neuroprotection (reduction of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis; enhancement of autophagy and neurogenesis) and specific mechanisms identified in models of certain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and ischemic stroke. Nootropic and antidepressant effects have been noted in models of mental disorders.</p>
<title>Conclusion</title><p>Conclusion. This review presents the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying the neurotropic effects of steroid saponins of Dioscorea nipponica. The breadth of these effects allows steroid saponins to be considered as potential candidates for drug development.</p>
</trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>диоскорея ниппонская</kwd><kwd>нейротропный эффект</kwd><kwd>нейропротекция</kwd><kwd>стероидные сапонины</kwd><kwd>диосгенин</kwd><kwd>диосцин</kwd><kwd>протодиосцин</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Dioscorea nipponica</kwd><kwd>neurotropic effect</kwd><kwd>neuroprotection</kwd><kwd>steroid saponins</kwd><kwd>diosgenin</kwd><kwd>dioscin</kwd><kwd>protodioscin</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Steinmetz J.
